AG Jeff Sessions created a Task Force on Crime Reduction. One of its subcommittees has a charge related to cannabis:
“Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department’s overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities.”
Task Force members are drawn from DEA, ATF, FBI & US Marshals Service. Sessions wants recommendations by July 27.
Thus, as the Governor of California proposes to harmonize recreational and medical cannabis regulations and Senator Wyden introduces legislation that provides a path to federal legalization, the Attorney General moves in a very different direction.
